Provisioning

One of the main barriers to achieving a healthier diet is access to a range of good quality affordable produce.

A key aspect of what ECFI does is the provision of affordable fresh fruit and vegetables to local communities, organisations, nurseries and childcare centres right across Edinburgh. This is done from the central warehouse and office base in Leith.

A warehouse team consisting of three full time and one part time staff collate and deliver up to around two hundred orders every week.

The range of produce available varies across different programmes. The children’s projects provide a specific list of what is available for snack fruit and for sale through the various fruit stands and fruit snack initiatives, This varies according to seasonal and market availability and is supplemented through the many promotional activities provided by the projects.

A full range of fresh produce and some dried goods such as beans and pulses are available to the community initiatives. The fresh produce basic order form consists of over eighty different items, and is constantly augmented by whatever other produce is available according to the season.

This ranges from apple, banana, carrots and potatoes through aubergines, bean sprouts, courgettes and mange tout, to mooli, okra, physallis and butternut squash.

ECFI is also supplied by a growing number of local, often organic, growers who provide a diverse range of seasonal high quality fruits and vegetables that we make available through the food co-ops at very affordable prices.
